My daughter is a major Hannah Montana fan. If you are not familiar with this Disney Channel show, let me enlighten you. The premise is about a young teen girl named Miley Stewart (played by Miley Cyrus) who lives with her dad Robby Ray Stewart (played by Billy Ray Cyrus of “Achy Breaky Heart” fame) and lives a double life as a normal teenaged girl and also a major music star, Hannah Montana.

I’m always cautious about the shows my impressionable 9-year old daughter watches because she has a real flair for the dramatic, and if I do not want to see/hear a re-enactment of a scene from a TV show, I have to limit what she can watch. That said, I love Hannah Montana. The father-daughter interactions and situations are only enhanced by the real-life father-daughter relationship of the actors. Recently, Billy Ray Cyrus wrote this song for his daughter Miley and sang it for her on the show. When I first heard it, my heart squeezed. I’m not facing this yet, but I know one day, all too soon, I will. And this song captures the emotion of watching your little girl grow up.

I recommend you download it from itunes. In the meantime, here are the lyrics:

She’s gotta do what she’s gotta do
And I’ve gotta like it or not
She’s got dreams too big for this town
And she needs to give ’em a shot
Whatever they are

Looks like she’s all ready to leave
Nothing left to pack
There ain’t no room for me in that car
Even if she asked me to tag along
God I gotta be strong

(chorus)
She’s at the startin’ line of the rest of her life
As ready as she’s ever been
Got the hunger and the stars in her eyes
The prize is hers to win
She’s waitin’ on my blessings before she hits that open road
Baby get ready
Get set
Don’t go

She says things are fallen into place
Feels like they’re fallen apart
I painted this big ol’ smile on my face
To hide my broken heart
If only she knew
This is where I don’t say what I want so bad to say

This is where I want to but I won’t get in the way
Of her and her dreams
And spreadin’ her wings

She’s at the startin’ line of the rest of her life
As ready as she’s ever been
Got the hunger and the stars in her eyes
The prize is hers to win
She’s waitin’ on my blessings before she hits that open road
Baby get ready
Get set
Don’t go

She’s at the startin’ line of the rest of her life
As ready as she’s ever been
Got the hunger and the stars in her eyes
The prize is hers to win
She’s waitin’ on my blessings before she hits that open road
Baby get ready
Get set
Please Don’t go

Don’t go
Don’t go
She’s gotta do what she’s gotta do
She’s gotta do what she’s gotta do
